From a Love of Nature to a Mission for Sustainability
In June 2024, Meisterpilze was officially founded.
But the roots of our story reach much deeper—into childhood memories, scientific curiosity, and a shared belief that food production can (and must) be more sustainable.
Two Paths, One Vision
Luis grew up in Portugal, surrounded by fields, animals, and plants. Nature was not an abstract concept—it was daily life. Early on, he became fascinated by understanding how things work at the molecular level, which led him to study Chemistry.
What was meant to be a short two-month visit to Erlangen turned into a 13-year journey—and a new life in Germany

Jonas, on the other hand, was born in Erlangen but spent much of his youth abroad—in Shanghai, Los Angeles, and Hawaii. Exposure to different cultures shaped his curiosity and global perspective. Eventually, he returned to Erlangen, studied Biology, completed his PhD, and gained years of experience in scientific research.

Different backgrounds. Same mindset:
Science-driven. Nature-inspired
The First Big Idea: Mycelium Materials
Four years ago, we combined our knowledge and values into our first joint project. With the support of the makerspace ZAM in Erlangen, we began developing sustainable materials from mushroom mycelium and agricultural waste—an eco-friendly alternative to Styrofoam.
The idea was bold. The science was exciting. The vision was clear.
But like many pioneering technologies, it wasn’t yet economically viable at small scale. Instead of giving up, we adapted.
We asked ourselves:How can we apply everything we’ve learned in a way that is sustainable, local, and economically resilient?
